Sixty-five years ago today, while serving aboard a United States Navy destroyer in Leyte Gulf off Samar, Philippine Islands, my Uncle Jeff went to be with our Lord . I never got to know him but he was my daddy's beloved younger brother. He left behind a beautiful wife and an adorable five year old daughter, Nancy.
Uncle Jeff gave his life for the country he loved. He served as a radio operator and left his post to take over for a gunner who was killed. Subsequently he was fatally wounded and died in the waters after his ship went down.
May we always remember Uncle Jeff and his many comrades at arms who gave their lives so that we may be free.
